I recently came across a Google ad from India, and even though I couldn’t understand the language, the powerful storytelling was so evident that it brought me to tears. It’s a brilliant example of emotional and creative advertising transcending language barriers. 😢

Years ago, an old P&G advertising guru shared a golden rule: “You know you have a good TV ad if you can turn the sound off and still understand it.” This rule forces ads to be simpler and more visually compelling. 📺

Google Advertising India Reunion Old Friends make you cry

Google India ad

Google "reunion" ad from India

The Google ad I mentioned earlier is a perfect example of this rule in action. With no English at all, the story is easy to follow, and I was able to understand it without missing a beat. Sometimes, it’s not the words but the emotions that create a lasting impact. 💓🌍

Beautifully shot,  a 3½-minute ad that felt more like a mini-movie than a typical TV commercial. Beautifully shot, authentic to the culture, and featuring stunning visuals, music, and language, the ad tells a heartwarming story of two friends reuniting after years apart. 💕

The ad showcases the power of Google in our daily lives, demonstrating how we search, find, track, and check countless little things that make life easier. With millions of likes and shares across social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the ad captivates audiences and entwines the brand subtly without overdoing it. 🌐

The emotional impact of the ad, culminating in tears, compels viewers to share it, allowing others to experience the magic. This brilliant piece of storytelling proves that sometimes, less is more, and emotion can be the most powerful tool in advertising. 👏

Google Super Bowl ad

Google Paris Super Bowl ad

Google’s Parisian Love Super Bowl ad is a heartwarming and memorable commercial that first aired during the 2010 Super Bowl. The ad is a perfect example of storytelling through simplicity and emotion, using only Google search queries to convey a love story that unfolds over time. 🇫🇷 💕

Details of the Google Paris ad

The ad starts with a Google search for “study abroad Paris,” followed by various searches about learning French, finding accommodations, and adjusting to life in the city. The protagonist then searches for a local café, where he meets a girl, and their love story begins. 📚☕️

As the ad progresses, the search queries reveal their blossoming relationship, with questions about romantic restaurants, long-distance relationships, and job opportunities in Paris. The story reaches its emotional peak when the protagonist searches for “how to assemble a crib,” indicating that the couple is now expecting a baby. 👶💞

This Google Super Bowl ad, Parisian Love, masterfully conveys a touching story through a series of search queries, highlighting the role Google plays in our lives while tugging at our heartstrings. It remains one of the most memorable and creative ads in Super Bowl history. 🌟

Advertising Decisions

The Creative Brief defines the box.

At Beloved Brands, we believe the best creative people are in-the-box problem solvers, not out-of-the box inventors. This builds on our Strategic ThinkBox we used in our planning process. The box below demonstrates how we need creative work that is focused on the target, fits with the brand, delivers the message, and executes the strategy.

As marketers, we kick off the advertising process using a Creative Brief to define the box the creative advertising must play in. The execution align with the brand positioning work and deliver the brand strategy statements you wrote in your marketing planMoreover, we show examples of the good and bad of the Creative Brief. And, we introduce our Mini Brief for smaller projects and the Media Brief as part of media decisions. We have a Creative Brief template you can use.

Use our ABC's of Advertising: Attention, brand link, communication stickiness

Here are four questions to ask:

  • First, is it the creative idea that earns the consumer’s attention for the ad?
  • Then, is the creative idea helping to drive maximum brand link?
  • Next, is the creative idea setting up the communication of the main consumer benefit?
  • And, is the creative idea memorable enough to stick in the consumer’s mind and move them to purchase?

Marketing Careers

On a classic marketing team, there are four key levels:

  • Assistant Brand Manager.
  • Brand Manager.
  • Marketing Director or Group Marketing Director.
  • VP Marketing or CMO.

To illustrate, click to zoom in on the brand management career pathway.

In simple terms, the Assistant Brand Manager role is about doing, analyzing and sending signals you have leadership skills for the future.

At the Brand Manager level, it becomes about ownership and strategic thinking within your brand plan. Most Brand Managers are honestly a disaster with their first direct report, and get better around the fifth report.

When you get to the Marketing Director role, it becomes more about managing and leading than it does about thinking and doing. To be great, you need to motivate the greatness from your team and let your best players to do their absolute best.

And finally, at the CMO level, you must create your own vision, focus on your people to make them better and shine, drive the business results, and run the processes.
